Epoxy is cheaper. Polyurea is better. Both statements are true, which is why this comparison deserves more honesty than it usually gets. We spray polyurea for a living and we’ll still tell you: some jobs belong to epoxy. Here’s how to tell which one is yours.

When Epoxy Is the Right Call
A climate-controlled interior floor with stable concrete, light-to-medium traffic, no thermal shock, and a schedule that can spare a curing window — a retail showroom, a dry warehouse aisle, a basement shop floor. If that’s your project and the budget is tight, epoxy will serve. We’d rather tell you that than sell you a premium you don’t need.
When Polyurea Earns Its Premium
- You can’t shut down. Same-day return to service vs. most of a week. For a production floor, a loading dock or a truck bay, the downtime difference usually exceeds the price difference by itself.
- The substrate moves or cycles. Outdoor slabs, freezer floors, washdown areas, anything with freeze-thaw or hot-cold swings — rigid epoxy cracks, elastomeric polyurea doesn’t.
- Chemical containment. For SPCC secondary containment, tank lining and process areas, polyurea’s chemical resistance and seamless crack-bridging membrane are the point.
- Impact and abrasion. Forklift traffic, dragged pallets, dropped tools — polyurea is the same chemistry family as truck bedliners, and it shows.
- It’s November. Polyurea sprays in cold weather. Epoxy season ends in fall; ours doesn’t.
The Catch: Application Skill Is Everything
Polyurea’s speed is also its trap — it gels so fast that surface prep and equipment technique decide everything, and a bad polyurea job fails faster than a bad epoxy job. Plural-component rigs, heated hoses, and crews who run them daily are not optional. (It’s the same reason we win floor and waterproofing work: we already own the equipment and the muscle memory.)
